God's Teaching

Trusting with the Pieces

This is the year.
2017 will go down in history- my history at least.

Turning to the first page of a fresh calendar, I see God in this year. Not only on the pages, but in the details. I don’t know His plans; I don’t know what joys and what hardships this year will hold. I do know that God is in 2017. He’s in the changes and the mundane.
He promises to provide.

Lord willing, this year my fiancé will graduate, we will get married, we will move away, he will get a job, I will graduate, and I will get a job.

Read this passage with me:

“And [Jesus] said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?…O you of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” Luke 12:22-32 [emphasis/additions mine]

I see a common theme:
*Do not be anxious,
Why are you anxious?
Do not be worried,
Fear not, little flock. *

Some might say that I have ‘good reason to worry’ about life right now. But it is so clear that worry is a sin. Just in the passage from Luke, Jesus instructs us not to worry three times. So no, I have no excuse to worry even now when changes are on the horizon. Why? Because I AM BEING PROVIDED FOR. “Your Father knows that you need them”

Looking forward, there are things that I expect that the Lord will provide answers to. And I bet that by the start of 2018, prayers will be answered about:

1. wedding details
2. where Leo and I will move
3. when Leo and I will move
4. what job Leo will get
5. what job I will get
6. being a loving, gracious, respectful wife

And it’s funny, you know..

I have truly spent way more time worrying about those six topics than I should. I should not worry for one millisecond.  That reveals a deep root of mistrust in our God. I have struggled to trust Him with these changes and unknowns.

But He knows what we need. He knows what birds need and He provides for them. He feeds them, nourishes them, protects them- and they’re birds!  The Bible says people are created in the likeness of God. We are special to Him above all other creations! He really cares about us. He’s in sync with our thoughts, feelings, and concerns. He knows what we need. He’s not going to withhold from His adopted, beloved kids.

“for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
Matthew 6:8b

“For the Lord is a sun and a shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.”
Psalm 84:11

God is greater- He’s mighty and all powerful. He’s not weak and passive.

Walk with me through this word picture:
God’s holding all the pieces of 2017 like pieces to a puzzle. Now, this puzzle is a big puzzle of my whole life. So far, God has filled in some small pieces here and there over my 21 years. And this year will be a year where several more pieces will be put into place for me to see.
(the puzzle pieces such as a spouse, job, location, timing of our move, etc.)

And I’ll look back once I flip a new calendar to January 2018. I’ll see God’s faithful hands. He’s got me in one hand. With the other hand, He gently puts the puzzle of my life together, piece by piece, to where I can see them. He’s going to teach me about each new puzzle piece as it becomes part of the big picture:
What it means
How to handle it
How to glorify Him with it.

But we have got to be listening. We may miss what He’s trying to explain if we’re just begging to see the next piece. We may beg Him to take back a piece, rather than listening to Him. Listening to God looks like reading the Word, praying, and seeking advice from wise believers.

Like, the God of the universe- the God who created us and knows us perfectly and intimately- the God who cares for and loves us more than we can even fathom- He will not let His children go unprovided for. He literally orchestrates everything. He works everything out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purposes (Romans 8:28). We can trust that with our full mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical beings.

When we worry, it takes so much away from enjoying life. Rather than choosing peace and choosing to listen to Truth, we let ourselves fall into a cycle of sensitivity, withdrawal, and anxiety. Where we reject His comfort. “Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Seek God. We get so distracted with shortcomings that our focus becomes on our selves and our problems. That’s not seeking God, that’s seeking self. And you know what happens when we’re all about ourselves? We lose sight of Truth. We forget God. We fall hard because we’re weak without Him. But He’s right here.

Let’s speak God’s truths to ourselves rather than listen to ourselves and to the enemy. All he came to do is steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). The last thing the enemy wants us to do is have a thriving relationship with God. Satan is strong, but our God is way stronger, according to 1 John 4:4b “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” Dwelling inside of us is this incredible power to fight sin and lies – let’s tap into that.

God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The God who led Moses across dry land; The God who forgave David for adultery, deceit, and murder; The God who conquered Satan, sin, and death for our sake. He is the same and He is with us. Trust Him with the pieces.

entitled “trusting God with the pieces”

because little by little, God is teaching me
that He has the reigns of my life
in His wise, loving grip
and I can stop trying
to snatch them back.
